Shuck Dieback (physiological)
Key words: physiological, nut drop, variety, reaction
Shuck dieback is a physiological disease of pecan nuts, possibly caused by hormonal imbalance. This condition is commonly associated with Success and Success hybrids. Nuts infected with this disorder do not fill properly, due to the peduncle being girdled earlier, and drop from trees 1 to 2 weeks early. This results in the formation of what are known as "pops." The shucks turn black at the tip and open in a normal manner, but no kernel is formed. No effective control has been found for this condition.
