Pecan IPM Toolbox
Amount of Nitrogen to Apply
Pecan orchards that have been out of production should be examined for spacing, soil drainage and overall nutrient condition, including soil and, especially, leaf analyses (in July). They most likely will need nitrogen amendments (see table). Often split applications in early and late spring achieve the best uptake. Some producers also apply a "booster" application of ~20 units of N at the initiation of the water stage in years of high production in the belief this can aid in nut filling. This is still under scientific investigation to determine if benefits outweigh costs.
| Standard Rates of Nitrogen for Bearing Pecan Orchards | |
|---|---|
| Natives | 60 units N per acre |
| Bottomland orchards | 90 units N per acre |
| Upland orchards | 100 units N per acre |
