Space Needs in Pecan Orchards
More space is needed for roots than leaves. All of the functional roots are in the top 32'' of the soil. There are twice as many roots as there are shoots, and the roots, also, extend twice as far out from the trunk as the limbs. So, when the limbs of adjacent trees touch, the roots overlap and are all crowded into the top 32 inches' of soil.
