Survey Each Variety
In improved orchards, each variety should be rated separately. Unlike the natives, not all of the trees need to be rated. Many varieties can be quickly dismissed from phylloxera treatments if no galls are observed. At least 5 percent of the trees in a block of a single variety showing gall formation should be rated, to determine the actual need to spray.
