Obscure Scale Control

Dormant Oil or Insecticide?

Scales can only be controlled in the winter with a dormant oil spray or in the early spring with a precisely timed insecticide application. Scale must be watched very closely to observe the crawler stage, if the latter strategy is used. Dormant oils provide satisfactory control, when applied between leaf drop and budbreak. Timing is not as critical with the dormant spray method, so it is often preferred to insecticides.
